Resize volume on dynamic disk with server partition magic in Windows server operating system

Dynamic disk is widely used in server. But most server partition magic is designed for basic disk. With dynamic disk, users usually need to resize volume. Resizing volume can be a dangerous operation because it will probably cause data loss or volume damage. MiniTool Partition Wizard 6.0 is an excellent partition magic but it has no functions of managing dynamic disk. MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0 developed by MiniTool Solution Ltd. has been improved on the basis of MiniTool Partition Wizard 6.0 and added with dynamic disk management functions. With MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0, users can resize volume easily. As is known to all, dynamic disk is so different from basic disk. The same, resizing volume is very different form resizing partition. Let's get to know about differences between basic disk and dynamic disk before we use MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0 to resize volume.

Differences between basic disk and dynamic disk
Volume and partition is dynamic and basic disk units. That means basic disk users use partition to classify and save data, and dynamic disk users use volume to save different kinds of data. There are common points as well as differences between dynamic disk and basic disk:
1. One basic disk only contains 4 partitions: three primary partitions at most and one extended partition. Extended partition contains multiple logical partitions. Dynamic disk has no limit on volume number. As long as disk space allows, we can create any number of volumes in dynamic disk.
2. Partition can only exist in single disk instead of spanned disks. Dynamic disk allows creating spanned volume.
3. Dynamic disk has 5 types of volumes: simple volume, striped volume, spanned volume, mirrored volume and RAID-5 volume.
Different volumes have different functions. For example, mirrored volume provides fault-tolerant function, and striped volume improves disk speed and efficiency, etc. But simple volume can only save data with single disk space as partition in basic disk.
4. Different from basic disk, configuration information of dynamic disk is saved to disk to make transferring of dynamic disk from computer to computer more convenient.
These 4 are the most common differences between dynamic disk and basic disk. What are the differences between resizing volume and resizing partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0?

How to use MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0 to resize volume and partition?
At first, run MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0 in Windows Server 2003 and enter into main interface:

Let's take simple volume for example, and meanwhile, we resize partition in basic disk to compare.
Select the simple volume E: in dynamic disk and click "Move/Resize" button on toolbar.

Drag the black triangle to resize volume. After setting, click "OK" button to return to main interface. Select J: partition in "Disk 4", and then click "Move/Resize" button.

Interfaces of resizing volume and resizing partition are almost the same. After setting, click "OK" button to return to main interface.

Through preview effect, we can find that no matter simple volume E: in dynamic disk or partition J: in basic disk are successfully resized.

Notice: for spanned volume, mirrored volume, or other types of volume, resizing operation is the same with that on simple volume.

MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0 helps us finish resizing volume perfectly and also provides us with a series of dynamic disk management functions. Please visit official website http://www.partitionwizard.com for more information about MiniTool Partition Wizard 7.0.
