The Brief History of DVD

The Brief History of DVD

In 1980, after the regulation of CD specification, people find that the density of data storage can be increased by the shortening of the wave of laser. Thus, a new high density CD comes into being. It is called HDCD, Which is to store long time, high quality films. Tip: At present, there is a kind of high definition CD that also called HDCD, but it is not HDCD here.

In the end of 1994, SONY and PHILIPS published the specification of digital VCD standard called MMCD. Then, in January 1995, Toshiba, Time Warner, Matsushita Electric, Pioneer, Hitachi, MCA, MGM, Tom Thomson and other six companies have also released called the SD (Super Density disc Super Density Disc) Another digital video CD-ROM specification.

The competition between MMCD and SD is the same as that of SONY-Beta and JVC and VHS. In order to avoid the same tragedy, some American film industry and computer industry, APPLE, COMPAQ, HP, IBM, MICROSOFT had been tried their best to reach a unified specification. The unified specification for DVD is formulated on 8th December, 1995. The unification of DVD standard can meet the needs of storage media with large capacity and high performance. So DVD is widely used in audio and video area that enhances the development of press, broadcast, telecommunication and Network. The logo of DVD is like the below picture.
